Gluten-Free Vegan Friendship Bread

Here, traditional Amish friendship bread is made gluten-free and vegan. More than just a recipe, it’s a way to stay in touch with friends. Give a mini-loaf of sweet, spiced bread with a 10-day bread starter and tell your friends to keep on giving!


For the Bread Starter:

  1. Day 1) In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in water and let stand 10 minutes, Combine 1 C. flour and 1 C. sugar in a glass bowl and mix thoroughly. Slowly stir in 1 C. Almondmilk and the yeast mixture. Loosely cover the bowl and let stand until bubbly. Leave loosely covered at room temperature, overnight.
  2. Days 2 – 4) Stir starter and pour into a gallon sized freezer bag.
  3. Day 5) Stir in 1 C. flour, 1 C. sugar and 1 C. Almondmilk.
  4. Days 6 – 9) Squeeze the bag twice/day.
  5. Day 10) Stir in 1 C. flour, 1 C. sugar and 1 C. Almondmilk. Reserve 1 cup to make your first batch of mini-loaves. Measure 4 – 5 (1 C.) portions of starter into quart-sized freezer bags.
  6. On the same day, give each friend one baked mini-loaf and 1 cup of starter with ingredients and instructions to start the process over. This will be their “Day 1.”


For the Baked Mini-loaves:

  1. To 1 C. starter, add the oil, Almondmilk, egg replacer and vanilla. Mix well. In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt.
  2. Add the raisins, if using.
  3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Mix well and pour into 6 prepared mini-loaf pans. If desired, sprinkle with additional cinnamon and sugar. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour.
